Farm Chores

Lambing season is almost here so we took advantage of the warm weather clean out the the sheep run-in.

Checking out our progress.

The garden shed doubles as a nursery for sick animals and bottle babies. Miss Lily, the latest resident has graduated to the big barn to keep Leroy company so time to move out.

Note the sagging door – Lily has been head butting the daylights out of the door and knocked it off the bottom hinge.

Bottle bribery.

Not liking the road.

The world just got bigger.

Calves, Chickens and Lambs, Oh My!

What a week it has been. We went to an auction and got a great buy on 2 little Holstein heifers.
Then one of the cows on the farm had milk issues and couldn’t feed her calf so we rescued it and added it to the Holsteins. Everyone is on a bottle and doing fine. GC has his hands full with them!

It’s amazing how things work out….our chicken flock really got wiped out by coons this winter and we were down to one lonely hen. A couple of days ago a neighbor called with the news that he knew someone that was downsizing and was giving hens away. GC went over and tried to buy 5 but the owner wouldn’t hear of taking any money. He was polishing his own karma! We do plan on taking over some venison to him or some of our home-cured bacon as a thank you.

The day after bringing the new hens home another neighbor heard we had lost our rooster and brought us another one. Yesterday GC called me at work to let me know that Laverne the sheep just had twin lambs – a boy and girl!
Spring is definitely here! The daffodils are almost ready to bloom, the to-do list is growing, and there are baby animals everywhere!
